Trees along Knockfree Avenue and Knockpouge Avenue are set to remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Daily protests have been taking place in the area since last month in opposition to proposed cycle lanes, and residents have welcomed assurances from contractors this evening that the trees earmarked for removal will not be felled at this time.
While the trees maybe safe for now , no one mentioned that work to construct the cycle lanes will also stop.
Several public meetings were held where locals voiced strong objections to the cycle lanes, which Cork City Council approved as part of an active travel scheme for Farranree on Cork’s north side.
While many residents say they support safer roads, they argue the plans would lead to the loss of hundreds of parking spaces and the removal of mature trees — a move they believe would be devastating for the community.
Campaigners told All About Cork this evening that although they are relieved the trees have been spared for now, they remain concerned the reprieve could be temporary and say they will continue to closely monitor developments.
