Fifty years ago today, Pauline and John Healy stood hand in hand and promised to build a life together.
Surrounded by family and friends, they began a journey filled with ordinary days, quiet sacrifices, laughter, and love — the kind of love that grows stronger with time.
They made their home in Knocknaheeny, the house became a place of noise and comfort, of schoolbags by the door and Sunday dinners around the table.
Sadly there was heartbreak too — the unimaginable loss of one of their children at a very young age — but like they always had, they leaned on one another and carried on.
For 46 years, that house held their memories. It witnessed birthdays, Christmas mornings, grandchildren’s visits, and the gentle rhythm of a life shared.
Then, last month, while they were away on holiday, everything changed.
A fire ripped through the home they had built their lives in. Flames swallowed , not just walls and furniture, but photographs, keepsakes, and decades of history. The house was destroyed.
The contents were uninsured, and In a matter of hours, the physical reminders of fifty years together were gone.
Now, instead of preparing to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in the home they cherished, Pauline and John are living in a room at the Maldron Hotel Shandon.
The staff there have shown them great kindness, offering comfort in a time of shock and grief. But a hotel room is not a home.
John struggles with mobility issues, Pauline lives with one lung and other serious medical conditions. Because of their health, they cannot stay with family, though their children visit them every day — bringing warmth, reassurance, and reminders that they are not alone.
Still, each month, they continue to pay rent to Cork City Council for the boarded-up, fire-damaged house they cannot enter.
Local councillor Tony Fitzgerald has described their situation as a crisis and has been working tirelessly on their behalf, calling on council officials to prioritise the couple — to refurbish their council-owned home or provide them with somewhere safe and suitable to live.
After fifty years of marriage, after raising a family, after weathering loss and illness together, Pauline and John are not asking for much. Just a place to call home again.
Earlier today All About Cork met with the golden couple and ensured despite their dire situation managed to raise a glass to 50 years of marriage
