Two men in their 20s remain in hospital after being shot during a riot in Ballyvolane, Cork, this afternoon Sunday
The disturbance, involving two feuding groups, happened at the Spring Lane Halting Site when the two factions clashed.
Two men were shot, while a number of people received serious cuts from weapons believed to have included slash hooks and iron bars, as well as concrete blocks.
It is believed both victims were driven to hospital by members of their families.
Dozens of Gardaí, including members of the Armed Support Unit, were on the scene within minutes of receiving numerous calls from terrified residents living nearby.
A number of men were seen running from the site and throwing away their balaclavas.
It is understood searches are underway for a number of guns thought to have been used in the shootings.
The victims’ injuries are described as non-life-threatening at this time.
This is the second day in a row that Gardaí have responded to clashes at the site.
Patrols have been stepped up in and around the area in the event of further attacks tonight.
Residents living nearby said it was like a scene from the wild West and are extremely fearful that some innocent person will get caught up in the crossfire.
Local politicians including Ken O’ Flynn TD and Cllr John Maher have expressed their outrage and said ordinary decent hard working families must be allowed to live safely in their own homes.
