The Road To The Aviva

Sunday’s FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium will bring back so many memories for Cork City fans.

Under John Caulfield, City appeared in four finals in a row, taking home the trophy in both 2016 and 2017.

But City were a match for Dundalk, their opponents in all of those four finals and now the Rebel Army are the clear underdogs going into Sunday’s final against league champions Shamrock Rovers.

After a league campaign to forget, which saw City relegated for the second time in three years, Ger Nash’s side get one final chance at redemption.

One match to bring the trophy back to leeside for the first time in eight years and with it a place in Europe.

City though will need to be at their very best on Sunday. They need a performance like the semifinal win over St. Patrick’s Athletic to have any chance you feel, although Ger Nash’s side drew with Rovers 1-1 at Turners Cross in their most recent clash back in September and they are boosted by the return of Ruairi Keating also.

Shamrock Rovers last won the Cup in 2019, their first in 38 years and will so desperately want to finish the season with a double and make it another season to remember for the best team in the land.

But finals take on a life of their own and City will feel that they can make it another tough day for their opponents on Sunday.

I’m saying City to win after extra time.
