SIXTEEN IN COURT

Thirteen men and three women, all in their 20s have appeared in court charged in connection with serious public order incidents in Cork city centre last night..

The court heard the alleged offences occurred at Oliver Plunkett Street, Daunt Square, Patrick Street, Cornmarket Street and Grand Parade.

Charges include, breaches of the public order act, failing to comply, assault and a charge under the misuse of the drugs act.

Sgt Gearoid Davis told Judge John King that further directions are awaited from the DPP in relation to all of the defendants who include Godson Ikebundu, Martin Ekhosuehi, Matthew Ekhosueh.Marvin Ekhosuehi, Emmanuela Anabo, Maureen Aigbera Checkwuebka, Ian AkabogaKanyisola Akintope, Dylan Mdangoh Nchantea, Malcolm Oshe, Farid Murphy, Djomiou Lahadjo, Emmanuella Itsede, Kamji Gotwen and Chimdi Oji

Those before the court have addresses in Cork, Dublin and Limerick.

Judge King was told that the majority of the defendants were working . One of the defendants has just graduated from college , another is due to start a university course in Belfast.

Free legal aid was granted to the majority of the defendants as their income fell under the threshold. One person has to enter a statement of means to the court to ensure he is eligible for free legal aid.

A number of Gardai were allegedly assaulted during last nights disturbances .

Sgt Gearoid Davis told the court that there was no objection to bail in the case. However, all of the defendants have to stay out of Cork city centre centre unless they have medical or legal appointments.

All sixteen were bailed and are due back in court in October.
