Mary Linehan Foley Elected Mayor of County Cork for a Second Term
Independent Councillor Mary Linehan Foley has been elected as the new Mayor of the County of Cork at the Annual Meeting of Cork County Council. Her nomination was proposed by Councillor Alan Coleman and seconded by Councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy.
A native of Youghal, Mayor Linehan Foley has been a public representative for 26 years. She began her political journey in 1999 when she was elected to Youghal Town Council, following in the footsteps of her father, Paddy Linehan, who served on the council for 46 years. She was elected to Cork County Council in 2014 and previously served as Mayor from 2020 to 2021.
Reflecting on her previous term during the COVID-19 pandemic, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve again under more normal circumstances. “The world was a very different place in June 2020… I am really looking forward to a more personal connection with my fellow elected members this time,” she said.
Mayor Linehan Foley emphasized her commitment to advocating for the entire county, citing successful investment projects in Youghal—such as the Boardwalk, the Midleton to Youghal Greenway, and the Clock Gate Tower—as examples of how targeted investment can transform communities. She pledged to champion similar development across County Cork.
Mayor Linehan Foley lives in Youghal with her husband John. They have five children and six grandchildren.
