A Cork man credited with coining the phrase “United States of America” has been honoured with a commemorative plaque at his birthplace on Blarney Street.
Stephen Moylan was born on Blarney Street, Cork city, in 1737. He later emigrated to America, where he became a General in the American Revolution and served as an aide-de-camp to George Washington.
Moylan is recognised as the first person to write the words “United States of America” in a letter dated January 2nd, 1776. That historic document is now held by the New York Historical Society.
The plaque was unveiled earlier today by local man Tom Coleman, chairperson of the Blarney Street and surrounding areas committee, who was joined by a large gathering for the occasion. Speaking at the event, he said:
“We’re very proud of Moylan, who left these shores a long time ago, but whose contribution links the history of Blarney Street to the founding of America.”
Councillor Tony Fitzgerald, who was also in attendance, said it was important to remember “a Cork man who played such a vital role in the Irish-American relationship.”
