Connecting Through Nature

2 Min Read

A walk in nature, taking in everything around us, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to unwind. Students from several schools across Cork experienced nature at its finest when they took part in the recent Walk for Water Awareness Day.

Beginning at the Lee Fields and continuing along the banks of the Curraheen River, this year’s Walk for Water unfolded in a truly picturesque setting.

Surrounded by flowing water, fresh air, and early signs of spring, the walk offered a peaceful reminder of the natural resources we often take for granted.

During the event, Stephen Hayes from Water Operations at Uisce Éireann pointed out the historic Old Waterworks across the River Lee, which once supplied water to households that could afford it.

Today, a modern treatment plant, upgraded in 2022 at a cost of €40 million, provides clean water to 70% of Cork City. He highlighted that delivering safe drinking water requires significant resources and stressed the importance of reducing waste.

As awareness of mental health continues to grow, the value of spending time outdoors is increasingly recognised. Events like the Walk for Water not only highlight environmental responsibility but also offer a chance to reconnect with nature, making it a meaningful way to mark Earth Day.
