Cork is crying out for engineers to support a wide range of projects planned for the city over the coming years.
Cork Luas, BusConnects, as well as housing and commercial infrastructure projects, are among the areas where engineers are needed.
The Chair of Engineers Ireland Cork Region, Mark Cotter, has highlighted the importance of strengthening Ireland’s engineering talent pipeline as Leeside continues to drive demand for engineering expertise.
Mr Cotter said: “More than 12,000 engineers and engineering technicians work in Cork, representing 15.4% of the national total.
“Their work supports a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, electrical services and medical devices.
“However, the number of graduates is declining in the civil and structural engineering disciplines, while graduate numbers in other engineering fields are increasing.”
Mark, who works as an Executive Engineer with Cork City Council in Operations and Maintenance, took up the role of Chair of Engineers Ireland Cork Region in May.
During his term, he plans to place innovation at the centre of the Region’s annual Continuous Professional Development Autumn Lecture Series, bringing together engineers and industry leaders to explore emerging technologies and new approaches shaping the sector.
“I am looking forward to a busy year ahead,” said Mr Cotter. “Engineers are often seen as innovators, and I want to make innovation the focus of the annual Cork Continuous Professional Development Autumn Lecture Series. With the advent of AI, modular and off-site construction, and modern methods of construction, I will seek to collaborate with industry leaders in these fields to provide informative continuous professional development sessions for the region.”
