A major investigation is underway in Cork tonight after a man was attacked in a so-called punishment beating, and a car used in the incident later crashed.
Emergency services were alerted to an incident on Pearse Road Ballyphehane , where a man in his 30s had been assaulted and beaten with a golf club around 8.30 pm.
Paramedics attended the scene and transferred the victim to hospital, where he is currently being treated. Firefighters from Anglesea Street also attended the scene.
It is understood that a number of men in stolen cars were in the area looking for the individual after first calling to his home.
A short time later, a car travelling at high speed ploughed into a wall at the rear of Musgrave Park on Tramore Road.
The driver fled the scene just moments before Gardaí arrived.
The car had been stolen in Cobh some time ago and was travelling on false plates.
Crash Scene Investigators carried out a detailed examination of the stolen car in an effort to gather evidence .
