Two people lost their lives on Ireland’s roads over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
It brings to110 the number of fatalities on the roads since far this year.
Despite repeated warnings, Gardaí arrested 169 motorists who got behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs.
From 7am last Thursday until 7am today (Tuesday), members of the Roads Policing Unit were out in force as part of a nationwide road safety campaign.
Officers also detected just over 4,400 drivers speeding, while a further 370 motorists were caught using a mobile phone or failing to wear a seatbelt.
The figures come after another tragic Bank Holiday weekend on Ireland’s roads, with Gardaí once again urging motorists to slow down, stay alert and never drive under the influence
Notable speeds detected yesterday, Monday 3rd August 2026, include:
- 78 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the R364, Kilkerrin, Co. Galway
- 101 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N52, Kells, Co. Meath
- 151 km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the R392, Ballinea, Co. Westmeath
- 145 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N7, South Kill, Co. Kildare
During the first five days, just over 370 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
The weekend’s road safety enforcement operation focused on the four lifesaver offences in an effort to ensure that all road users got home safely.
- Speeding
- Driving under the influence of an intoxicant
- Using a mobile phone while driving
- Not wearing a seatbelt
Gardai say road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and stick to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs.
Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving.
