Cork’s tourism sector is turning its attention to new overseas markets, with Canada and Germany identified as key targets in a renewed effort to increase visitor numbers to the city and wider region.
The strategy forms part of a major international marketing drive, which will also maintain a strong focus on established markets including the UK, Spain, France, the Netherlands and the United States.
Tourism remains a vital pillar of the Cork economy, currently supporting an estimated 22,500 jobs across the region.
Earlier today, around 150 representatives from the tourism and hospitality industry gathered in Cork to hear details of a new roadmap designed to further enhance the region’s tourism offering and strengthen its international appeal.
Addressing the event, Seamus Heaney, Head of Visit Cork, said the region is well placed to grow its share of the global tourism market but stressed the importance of broadening its overseas reach.
“Cork sits at the intersection of Ireland’s Ancient East, the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, giving us a unique positioning nationally and internationally,” he said. “While the US remains an important market, it is vital that we are not over-reliant on any single source and continue to develop new overseas growth markets.”
