Just 20 minutes from Cork City, this private dog park promises a safe space for your four-legged friends to run free. But is it worth the visit? We went along, dogs in tow, to find out!
Just when you thought you had explored all the dog-friendly gems Cork has to offer, along comes Ballincollig Dog Park!
As the proud owner of two lovable, energetic King Charles, I’m always on the lookout for new dog-friendly spots around Cork. Luckily, the Rebel County has us spoiled for choice, from the much-loved Marina Market and Fitzgerald’s Park to cafés and bars like Sunflour and Tom Barry’s, shopping centres like Douglas Court and Douglas Village, and beaches galore!

A few weeks ago, I had the bright idea of hosting a puppy playdate in my back garden with five of my friends and their very cute, very energetic dogs. What could possibly go wrong?
One small garden, five anxious pet owners and five excitable dogs of different ages, sizes and personalities later, and let’s just say chaos ensued. I know, who would have guessed?

So when I heard about a private dog park just 20 minutes from Cork City, my only question was, why hadn’t I heard about this last week?!
And so off we trotted on a Saturday morning, coffees in hand and dogs in tow, to check it out and see what we’d been missing!
First Impressions of Ballincollig Dog Park
We pre booked our morning slot for our two dogs online, which came to €15. One thing worth noting is that the signage at the entrance is easy to miss, so I’d recommend having Google Maps at the ready to avoid driving past it, especially if you’re directionally challenged like me! I reckon they could do with a bigger, bolder sign.
They say first impressions are everything, and I’ll admit, I felt a bit underwhelmed when we first pulled into the park.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but the word ‘park’ had conjured up something a little bigger, perhaps with more fun activities for dogs. I think I was half expecting some sort of canine boot camp!
I was definitely a little lukewarm at first, but the longer we spent there, the more I realised I’d been too quick to judge.
I think my mistake was looking at the place through human eyes rather than seeing it from a dog’s perspective, because within about 10 minutes, it was clear this place knew exactly how to please its target audience – the dogs!
Tails were wagging, noses were sniffing, and happy pups were enjoying the freedom to roam, explore and stretch their legs safely off-lead.
What might not seem like much to us humans is a whole world of excitement for our four-legged friends.
What’s Inside Ballincollig Dog Park?
The park is fully enclosed by high fencing, so there’s plenty of room for your furry friends to run around without having to worry about any surprise escapes.
There are water bowls and poo bags available on site, which is always a welcome bonus.

Every dog owner knows the sheer panic of realising you’ve forgotten the poo bags just when you need them most. Or, if you’re anything like me, discovering much too late that the three bags you’ve packed for your small dog somehow weren’t enough for a 50-minute outing!
There’s also a picnic table on site, which meant we were able to sit and enjoy our coffees while the dogs checked out the sights and smells. A little packed lunch would be the perfect addition on a bright, sunny winter morning.
There’s even a handy shelter for humans, where you can sit back with a book or simply watch your pooch having the time of their life, all while staying dry if the thought of standing in a muddy field in the rain doesn’t quite appeal!
A closer look around the enclosed one acre area also revealed some fun facts and interesting tips on dog behaviour, which made for a nice read.
First impressions aside, I think Ballincollig Dog Park gets the job done.

Would I go back? Absolutely, especially if my buddies fancied another meet-up with all our dogs!
That said, at €15 for 50 minutes, I don’t think I’d be running out there every other day.
I can definitely see the appeal for owners of bigger, more energetic dogs though who need plenty of space to run and roam.
My two had the whole place to themselves during our visit, but I’d like to see how they’d enjoy it with a few furry friends thrown into the mix. I imagine it could be a lovely opportunity for dogs who don’t get many chances to socialise, particularly if you organise a playdate with some fellow dog owners.

Each booking lasts 50 minutes, and with two small dogs, we probably didn’t need all that time. After a few rounds of fetch with a ball we found on site, they were already starting to tire!
But I can see how this place would be particularly handy if you’re living in a small space without a garden, or if you’ve got a gang of friends with dogs of their own.
It’s a great spot to book for a weekend morning catch-up, where you can enjoy a peaceful coffee and a chat while the dogs stretch their legs, run free and get some sniffing time, all within a secure, enclosed space.
And let’s face it, anything that keeps the dogs happy, exercised and ready for a long nap afterwards is a win in my book!/
