Celebrating The Life Of The Great Liam Reilly

4 Min Read

Some songs become hits, others become part of our lives, our memories and our very identity. And then there are songs that become part of a nation’s soul.

Few Irish songwriters have achieved that quite like the late, great Liam Reilly, the legendary Bagatelle frontman whose extraordinary gift for storytelling gave us some of the most loved and enduring songs ever written in Ireland.

Taken from us far too soon on New Year’s Day 2021, Liam may be gone, but his music remains very much alive. His songs continue to be sung in pubs, concert halls and music venues across Ireland and around the world, bringing generations together through melodies and lyrics that never grow old.

From the timeless magic of Summer in Dublin to the heartache and longing of Streets of New York, Liam had a rare ability to capture the emotions that connect us all.

His songs of emigration, love, loss and home struck a chord with the Irish diaspora, giving a voice to the hopes and heartbreak of those who left Ireland and those who longed for their return.

His remarkable catalogue also includes Trump Card, Second Violin, Raining in Paris, Leeson Street Lady, The Flight of the Earls and The Boston Rose.

These are songs that have travelled far beyond Ireland’s shores, embraced by singers and groups around the world and kept alive by devoted fans who continue to sing every word.

And his songwriting brilliance was never confined to Bagatelle. Liam’s compositions became part of the wider soundtrack of Irish music, with Streets of New York, famously performed by The Wolfe Tones, standing among the great Irish emigration songs of all time.

In 1990, Liam represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest with his own composition, Somewhere in Europe, finishing a remarkable second. It was another achievement in a career that deservedly secured his place among Ireland’s finest singer-songwriters.

Now, music lovers in Cork will have an opportunity to celebrate the man, his music and the legacy he left behind.

Bagatelle and Friends will come together at Sea Church in Ballycotton on Friday, November 20, for a special celebration of Liam Reilly’s extraordinary life and musical legacy.

It promises to be a night filled with memories, emotion and, above all, the songs that have meant so much to so many people.

For those who grew up listening to Bagatelle, it will be a chance to relive treasured memories. For younger generations, it will be an opportunity to appreciate the genius of a songwriter whose music continues to transcend time.

Yet perhaps the greatest tribute to Liam is not an award, a ranking or a memorial. It is the simple fact that, years after his passing, people still gather to sing his songs.

They sing them in Ireland, they sing them in America, Australia and Britain. They sing them wherever Irish people have made a home, and wherever a great song has found a place in someone’s heart.

Liam Reilly may have left us far too soon, but the songs he gave the world will never leave us.

On November 20, Cork has the chance to raise its voice, remember a remarkable man and celebrate a musical legacy that will live on for generations to come.

Because legends like Liam Reilly never really say goodbye. They live on in every chorus, every memory and every voice that sings their songs.
