Behind every shop facing closure is a business owner, employees and families who depend on those jobs — and Cork retailers are warning that rising costs are putting livelihoods at risk.
Retailers from across Cork gathered this morning as part of Retail Excellence Ireland’s pre-Budget campaign, calling on the Government to act before more businesses are forced to cut jobs or close their doors.
A key demand is a cut in Employers’ PRSI, which retailers say would help ease the growing cost of employing staff following successive minimum wage increases.
They say soaring wages, energy bills, insurance, rates and other operating costs are placing businesses under unprecedented pressure.
For many local retailers, they warn, the issue is no longer simply about profits — it is about keeping the doors open, protecting jobs and ensuring families can continue to earn a living in their own communities.
Retail Excellence Ireland is urging the Government to use the upcoming Budget to reduce the cost of doing business and protect employment across the retail sector.
