Ballincollig Heads Stateside

From kicking footballs in Ballincollig to taking on teams across the Atlantic — the women of Ballincollig LGFA are about to embark on an adventure to remember.

The club’s much-loved Gaelic4Mothers&Others team, proudly known as the “Collig Cailínís,” is heading to the United States this October to take part in the prestigious Boston G4M&O Blitz.

The team was formed in January 2021, as Ireland emerged from the restrictions of the pandemic. What started as a small group of women looking for a safe way to exercise, get outdoors and have a bit of fun has since developed into one of the most welcoming groups within the Ballincollig community.

And the team is open to everyone.

Cara Williams, a member of the squad, says the Collig Cailínís brings together women from all walks of life — from former inter-county players to complete beginners who had never played organised sport before.

“The squad represents ultimate inclusivity, featuring women of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds.”

Members have come to Ballincollig from across Cork, different parts of Ireland and overseas, creating a team that reflects the diversity of the community.

The group has already made its mark at home, successfully hosting two major national G4M&O Féiles and welcoming teams from around the country.

Now, the next destination is Boston.

But for the Collig Cailínís, it is about much more than football.

The team has become an important part of Ballincollig LGFA, helping with fundraising and volunteering while supporting and encouraging the club’s younger and adult players.

And perhaps their biggest impact is on the next generation.

“We want to show our daughters and the younger girls coming through the club that there doesn’t have to be an age limit on sport,” Cara said.

“You don’t have to be the best player, and you don’t have to have played before. You just have to come down, give it a go, and be part of the community.”

Now the countdown is on.

With their bags packed, their custom Laser Medical kits ready and a whole community behind them, the Collig Cailínís are preparing to swap Ballincollig for Boston.
