David Hickey, a young autistic adult living in Cork believed he would never experience a Debs night like the majority of people his age across the country. The bright lights, loud noises and busy atmosphere would all make the night difficult for David to truly enjoy.
His dream to party however is about to come true — and he shall go to the Ball
David�s heartbroken mother Theresa has decided to host an autism friendly Debutante Ball for David and other young autistic adults across the country, who may feel that their own Debs Ball would not be suitable for them.
The Autism Friendly Gold Tie Debutante Ball is set to take place on the 8th of September 2024 at the Radisson Blu Hotel Little Island.
This marks a significant milestone in promoting inclusivity and empowerment for young individuals on the autism spectrum. This unique event is the first autism friendly Debutante Ball in Ireland and aims to provide a supportive environment where Debutantes can celebrate their journey into adulthood.
The Gold Tie Debutante Ball is designed to be a sensory-friendly event. The organisers are being advised by the Autism Charity AsIam on autism friendly measures and accessibility. Therefore, special accommodations will be made to ensure all attendees feel comfortable. Some of the accommodation includes a sensory room, visual guides, reduced lighting, no dress code and music played at a reduced volume by the fantastic DJ�s Stevie G and DJ Jerry who himself is autistic.
�We are thrilled to host the first-ever Autism Friendly Debutante Ball,� said Theresa Hickey, the organiser of the Debs. �This event is all about celebrating inclusion and giving young autistic adults the opportunity to have a fantastic Debs night just like everyone else.� David says that this event will be a wonderful opportunity for him to experience a Debs that he would otherwise not have had the chance to.
