Cork Prison went into lockdown after a power failure earlier this evening.
Inmates many of whom were in the prison yard at the time, were ordered to return to their cells as soon as the jail went dark.
A source said the situation was handled extremely efficiently but prisoners were causing quite a racket while the jail was in darkness except for emergency lighting
The black out lasted around an hour and while there were no incidents to report a prison source said it’s somewhat amazing prisoners didn’t take the power cut as an opportunity to attack rival inmates before they were ushered back to their cells.
