There was a wonderful sense of pride and celebration in Cork City this week as traders, shoppers gathered to mark a remarkable milestone — 100 years of the iconic Winthrop Arcade.
The occasion was commemorated with the unveiling of a special plaque by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, honouring a landmark that has been at the heart of city life for a century.
Widely regarded as one of Cork’s most treasured retail destinations, Winthrop Arcade has welcomed generations of visitors through its elegant passageway, connecting people, businesses and communities since its opening in 1926.
Built by John Delany & Son and officially opened in 1926, the arcade introduced a pioneering concept to Cork — a covered pedestrian shopping thoroughfare linking two of the city’s busiest commercial streets.
At the time, it offered a unique shopping experience and housed 12 distinctive stores specialising in boutique and niche goods.
A century later, Winthrop Arcade continues to captivate visitors with its timeless charm.
Much of its original character remains beautifully preserved, from the stunning glass dome overhead to the elegant mahogany shopfronts and bronze display windows that reflect the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
As Cork celebrates this significant anniversary, Winthrop Arcade stands not only as a symbol of architectural heritage but also as a testament to the enduring spirit of local enterprise, innovation and community. One hundred years on, it remains a cherished destination and a proud part of Cork’s story, with many more chapters yet to be written.
