Speed, non wearing of seatbelts , drink or drug driving as well as using a mobile phone while behind the wheel and driver error or some of the factors resulting in road deaths.
Behind every statistic is someone who was loved and a family left grieving.
Figures released today from the Road Safety Authority show that between 2019 and 2023, 324 drivers were killed, and 2,353 drivers were seriously injured on Irish roads.
For every driver fatality, seven drivers were seriously injured.
Reacting to the figures Sam Waide, chief executive of the RSA, said: “All drivers have a huge responsibility in making sure our roads are safe for all users. Whether you�re a new driver or have been driving for decades, it�s paramount to drive safely. Speeding and impaired driving continue to be killer behaviours, and it is important to stay alert and never text, use social media or talk on the phone while driving.”
The findings are made using data from the Irish Road Traffic Collision Database, which is based on collision records transferred from An Garda S�och�na to the RSA.
