Retirement

One of Cork’s longest-serving elected representatives is set to retire after more than 50 years in public life.

Ted Tynan, a member of the Workers’ Party who was first elected to Cork City Council in 1979, has decided to step down due to ill health.

Speaking to All About Cork, the 83-year-old said that while he has enjoyed decades of representing the people who elected him, he has at times found the role extremely challenging because of bureaucracy and red tape.

In 1991, the Mayfield native was jailed for refusing to pay refuse charges.

Mr Tynan said the current housing crisis is “extremely sad” and described it as heartbreaking to see so many families without a place to call home.

The father of three said it had been a pleasure to play his part in helping people who placed their trust in him, and he hopes he made a positive difference during his time at City Hall.

Mr Tynan said he will make the official announcement before the council meeting later this evening, Monday.
