A woman has died and a man remains in a critical condition after both were stabbed during an incident in Cork last night.
The woman died after she and the man were attacked close to their home at Shewsbury Downs Ballinlough in Cork at around 9pm.
Emergency services responded after a number of residents in the area witnessed the incident unfold.
Armed Gardai were some of the first on scene and managed to disarm no the man who carried out the attack.
He was then arrested and take to the Bridewell Garda Station.
Paramedics as well as firefighters carried out CPR on the two critically injured people before they were transferred to Cork University Hospital.
Despite the best efforts by medical staff the woman who was in her 60s was pronounced dead a short time later.
The man underwent surgery and is currently critical.
The area remains sealed off this morning and further forensic examinations are due to be carried out.
The man in custody is known to the victims.
