Thinking about whether to adopt or buy a dog? You’re not the only one. With thousands of dogs ending up in shelters across Ireland every year, adoption is becoming an option more and more people are leaning towards. And sometimes, all it takes is one story to show you why.
That’s where Jezebel comes in. The CSPCA told us about this young hound, just two to three years old, who has already been through quite a journey. Back in July, the County Council Dog Warden arrived with her after spending weeks trying to catch her. By then, she was heavily pregnant and understandably terrified of everything around her. Luckily, the CSPCA had just opened their new maternity ward, funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development, which gave Jezebel a quiet and calm place to settle away from the busier kennels.

It might have seemed like her ordeal was over, but Jezebel’s story had one more dramatic twist. When she went into labour it became clear something wasn’t right. After the first pup was born she was rushed to Goolds Vets next door, where the team stepped in and helped her deliver six puppies. Sadly, one didn’t make it, but the others thrived thanks to the care she received.

Two months later Jezebel has said goodbye to her pups as they head off to new homes. The CSPCA staff told us that during her time there she has transformed from a frightened and shut-down dog into a sweet and gentle soul who now seeks out affection. What she needs now is the right home where she can finally feel safe.

Because she’s still shy, Jezebel will do best with an owner who has rescue experience, ideally someone who has cared for working breeds like hounds before. She could also benefit from having another dog in the house, one who can show her the ropes of home life. A fully enclosed garden is essential, and the CSPCA say she would thrive in a countryside or coastal setting. Most importantly, her new family must be committed for life, ready to guide her with training and patience every step of the way.
As the CSPCA told us, Jezebel has already shown such bravery and resilience. All she’s waiting for now is the chance to start her new chapter with a family of her own.
