Michael (Noel) and Ann O’Sullivan, a devoted couple in their eighties, were remembered with deep affection and admiration at their joint funeral mass at Sacred Heart Church in Glounthaune Co Cork today 4-7-25

Their unexpected passing earlier this week shocked and saddened the local community, but their lives were celebrated as one of unity, love, and quiet generosity.

Described as “inseparable” and “a tremendous couple,” Michael and Ann were found together near the stairs of their home by a relative on Monday. Foul play has been ruled out.

Michael, a long-serving employee of the GPO in Cork, and Ann, formerly of Irish Steel, had been married for 52 years—tying the knot on Ann’s birthday in Carrigtwohill.

Family friend Fr Aidan Vaughan, who led the funeral mass, remembered them as a couple who mirrored each other in kindness and faith. “They were united in life. They are united in death,” he said, praying that they are now reunited in the Father’s house.

Ann was remembered as the driver in their life together, with Michael as the navigator—both showing a deep commitment not only to each other, but to their families and community. Ann had selflessly returned to Glounthaune to care for her elderly parents, a duty she considered a privilege.

Their deep faith and generous spirit were echoed in tributes throughout the service, which was concelebrated by six priests and attended by Bishop Emeritus John Buckley. Symbols of their life together—such as a Cork GAA jersey, a radio, and a photo—were brought to the altar in their memory.

Michael is survived by his sister Mary, and fondly remembered by Sylvia, and his nieces Maureen and Yvonne. He was predeceased by his sibling Bernie.

Ann is survived by her brothers Gerry and Jim, and lovingly remembered by Julie, nieces Aoife, Bríona, Órla, Fíona, and nephews Eolan and Diarmaid. She was predeceased by her brother Eolan.

The couple were laid to rest together at St Joseph’s Cemetery, Little Island.

The Glounthaune community paid tribute, calling them “a deeply religious and devoted couple… known for their love for each other,” and for their enduring commitment to their village and its people”.
