The power of a close-knit community truly shines when adversity strikes — and this has never been more evident than in the aftermath of a devastating house fire in Dunerrow Co Cork earlier this year.
Homeowner Edel O’Regan and her family were sitting down to dinner when her son stepped out to the garage to check on something. Moments later, the carbon monoxide alarm clipped to his belt began to sound. He opened the door to a thick cloud of black smoke.
He rushed back inside to alert the family. But the fire had already taken hold, rapidly spreading through the home and causing extensive damage.
Firefighters arrived swiftly, managing to save the structure from total destruction. Still, the O’Regan family found themselves without a home, unsure of what to do next.
But locals in Dunderrow outside Kinsale Co, Cork refused to stand by and do nothing.
By the next morning, up to 60 neighbours and friends had gathered at the fire-damaged house, ready to help. Local tradespeople rolled up their sleeves, and together they began the rebuild.
This evening — just three months after the horrific blaze — the O’Regan family moved back into their beautifully renovated home.
“Words can’t describe how I’m feeling,” said an emotional Edel O’Regan, as she looked around her restored house. “I will never forget the kindness and support we received.”
