A Safer Cork

2 Min Read

Cork’s city centre is experiencing a renewed sense of safety and vibrancy thanks to an increased Garda presence, according to the Cork Business Association (CBA) and local retailers. Footfall is already rising, and businesses report a noticeable boost in customer confidence.

The CBA, through its Safe & Clean Committee, has long called for enhanced support to maintain Cork’s reputation as a welcoming urban destination. Committee head Kate Neville said the impact of the increased patrols has been “immediate and encouraging,” helping people feel more comfortable spending time in the city. She noted that the addition of City Centre Wardens further strengthens this sense of reassurance.

Retailers echo this positive reaction. Patrick Leader of Leaders Menswear said customers feel safer, improving both atmosphere and shopping experience, while Sheena McCarthy of Sheena’s Boutique highlighted increased energy and confidence on the streets. Mike Ryan of Cornstore described the shift in city centre atmosphere as “phenomenal,” praising the friendly interactions between the public, Gardaí, and wardens.

As Cork enters a busy season of events and festive shopping, businesses say the improved sense of safety encourages people to linger and enjoy the city. The CBA stresses the importance of sustaining this momentum.
