When it comes to making your home look beautiful, small changes can make a big difference, like a rug can significantly transform a room’s ambiance by influencing color, pattern, texture, and overall style. Choosing the right rug can make a space feel larger, cosier, or add a touch of personality and warmth. The main points to consider are size, color, pattern, and texture in relation to the room’s layout, furniture, and desired aesthetic.  If that all sounds too overwhelming, never fear. We asked Phoebe Holland, Managing Director of rugs.ie, who are celebrating 30 years in business in Cork to simplify everything from size to design (and everything in between) to help you spruce up your home with a rug.  One of the standout features is their virtual design consultation service, with an incredibly helpful room visualiser tool, which lets you place two different rugs side by side in the same room setting.  It’s a total game-changer for comparing styles and making the perfect choice.

How to choose the right rug?

A well-chosen rug can help transform a room, instantly creating a warm, cosy atmosphere. Choosing the wrong rug can close off your space and make it seem smaller. Choosing the right rug depends on the style and function you want for your space. Consider the room’s purpose and the amount of foot traffic it gets. For busy areas, durable materials like wool work well. Think about the colours and patterns that complement your existing décor to create a harmonious look. Also, consider the texture and thickness of the pile to ensure comfort and practicality. For a natural, grounded look,  opt for something featuring earthy tones and simple textures that work well in calm, neutral spaces. It’s important to think about your room’s colour palette, furniture and flooring when choosing a rug so it feels like a considered part of the space rather than an afterthought.

If you are looking for something more special you should opt for a bespoke mat that is specifically tailored for your space and style. Persian and Oriental rugs always put an emphasis on elegance, with their timelessness and excellent craftsmanship.  You might want to check out the  room visualiser tool to see which rug works best for you.

How to choose the right size rug for your room?

Picking the right size rug is crucial to balance the space.  It is important to measure your room and leave enough floor visible around the edges. In living rooms, a rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of furniture to sit on it, creating a connected feel. For dining rooms, the rug should extend beyond the table edges enough so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. In bedrooms, a rug can be placed under the bed extending beyond the sides to add warmth and softness underfoot. More information on rug sizing can be found here.

Tips to transform a room by accessorising it?

Accessories like cushions, throws, and rugs add layers and personality to a room. A well-chosen rug can anchor the space, define zones, and add colour or texture. Pair rugs with complementary or contrasting tones to create visual interest. Use different fabric textures to make the room feel inviting and comfortable. Adding plants, artwork, or statement lighting alongside rugs can complete the look and make the space feel thoughtfully designed.

How to clean and maintain a rug?

To keep rugs looking their best, gently vacuum your rug on the lowest setting using a nozzle head. Avoid using any vacuum with a beater bar as this may damage the pile. For spills, act quickly by blotting with a clean cloth without rubbing. Avoid using strong detergent or bleaching agents on your natural fibre rugs. Rotate your rug occasionally to ensure even wear and avoid sun damage. Using a rug underlay can prevent slipping and extend the rug’s life.
