Summer Holidays Bring Increased Risks For Vulnerable Children

As the summer holidays unfold, Childline is experiencing a significant surge in contacts from children and young people in distress. While this time of year is meant to be filled with joy, freedom, and carefree play, for many children, the long break from school brings isolation, fear, and even danger.

The absence of the daily structure and support provided by school means many children lose their vital lifeline—trusted teachers, caring adults, friends, and access to regular meals. For some, school is their only safe haven.

Reports of sexual abuse have increased by 10%
Contacts regarding physical abuse have risen by 24%
More than 100 contacts have been made for each category during the summer alone

Beyond abuse, children are also reaching out about food poverty, emotional neglect, financial hardship, and crippling social isolation.

Children like Abby are dreading every day of the summer. She describes her home with her single mother, who struggles with addiction, as a place of chaos and fear. School is her escape—where she can count on safety, a warm meal, and the watchful eyes of teachers who care.

Jack fears spending the holidays with his mother’s new partner, worried about anger that may erupt into violence. Jennifer, living in rural Ireland, is devastated by the thought of losing connection with her friends and spending weeks in complete isolation.

Finn, speaking to Childline’s National Listening Coordinator Elizabeth Donlon Fox, shared the emotional toll of his abusive home life. “He told me that he hates being at home,” she says. “Instead of enjoying the summer, children like Finn are living in fear and heartbreak.”
