Plaques bearing the name of former Lord Mayor of Cork John Murray have been removed from a bridge in the city.

The plaques were installed on South Gate Bridge during his time as a councillor and while he served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1993 to 1994.

Murray was convicted in 2013 of sexually assaulting his granddaughter, Elaine Murray, following a trial. Ms Murray waived her right to anonymity.

He was 83 at the time of sentencing and received a 12-month prison term for offences committed in the 1990s.

A campaign calling for the removal of the plaques had been ongoing for some time, with campaigners urging Cork City Council to take action. Their removal has been welcomed by those who supported the effort.

In 2016, a portrait of Murray was also removed from a gallery of former Lord Mayors at City Hall.
