An investigation is underway following the death of a man in Garda custody.
The man, who was in his 50s, was found unresponsive in a cell at a Garda station in Co Waterford in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Gardaí on duty at the time attempted to resuscitate him. Medics and first responders also attended the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.
In a statement to All About Cork, Gardaí confirmed the man passed away while in custody.
They said: “Despite immediate resuscitation attempts by Garda members and by medical personnel and first responders who attended, the man was later pronounced deceased. The Coroner has been notified.
“As per Garda policy, this matter has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, under Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.
“As this matter is being investigated by Fiosrú, An Garda Síochána is not in a position to comment further.”
Fiosrú, formerly known as GSOC, has been asked for comment.
