A Weekend in Killarney
Over a year ago, I made the move to Killarney, and it’s safe to say I’ve completely and utterly fallen in love. Tucked into the edge of Killarney National Park, is more than just beautiful. It’s warm. It’s welcoming. And it’s become home in a way that few places ever could.
The people here are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met – genuinely kind, always ready with a smile, and full of local stories and recommendations. But what truly captured my heart is the place itself: acres upon acres of pristine parkland, dotted with red deer that I now consider familiar companions on my early morning walks to Ross Castle. Watching the mist lift off Lough Leane as the castle emerges in the soft morning light is something that never gets old.
But Killarney isn’t just a pretty face. It has all the conveniences of a bigger town – from incredible food and drink to pampering beauty treatments, vibrant entertainment, and fabulous shopping. Plus, when I want a quick coastal getaway, I’m only a short drive from the golden sands of Rossbeigh or the wild magic of Inch Beach. Killarney also serves as a gateway to the jewels of Kerry – like the dramatic Skelligs (a boat ride from Portmagee), the charm of Dingle, the serenity of Ventry, and the quiet beauty of Fenit.
If you’re planning a weekend here, let me guide you to the best places to stay, eat, drink, and unwind.
Where to Stay
Most Luxurious:
The Great Southern
The Great Southern Killarney blends historic charm with modern comfort right in the heart of town. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to dress up for breakfast – and where every detail feels a little bit special. Their afternoon tea is a treat, especially in the grand surroundings of the hotel, and if you’re planning a festive getaway, there’s truly no better place to stay. At Christmas, the hotel transforms with stunning decorations that are second to none.
There’s a rich history here too, and the team is genuinely proud of it – don’t hesitate to ask for a quick tour, they’re always happy to share the stories behind the building. The bar food is excellent (as is the service), and whatever you do, don’t leave without trying their homemade brown bread – t’s unforgettable.

Best Family-Run Hotel:
Killarney Oaks Hotel
Warm, personal service and truly excellent food. Come during Christmas if you can—the decorations make it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.

Best Spas (yes, I’ve tried them all):
- The Europe – For indulgent luxury and lakeside views.

- Muckross Park Hotel – The spa here is truly top-tier.

- The Brehon – Ideal for a relaxing afternoon after a hike in the park.

Where to Eat & Drink
Best Steak:
Porter House – Their fillet on the hot stone (€46) is a must-try. Add those Killarney Blonde beer-battered onion rings and thank me later.

Best Fine Dining:
Harrow – Elevated cuisine in an intimate setting. Perfect for special occasions.

Best Small Plates:
Hilliards – For indecisive foodies (like me). Think exquisite cocktails, live music, and a tapas-style menu that’s fun and full of flavor.

Best Wine & Charcuterie:
The Ross – Chic and cozy. Come for the wine, stay for the people-watching.

Best Sunday Roast:
The Avenue – Traditional, hearty, and absolutely satisfying.

Best Pizza:
Tango Street Food – Thin bases, crisp edges and wood-fired to perfection. You can sit in or order to go, to get your cheesy fix.

Best Brunch:
- Zone Café & Restaurant – Their French toast with Greek yogurt and berry compote is heavenly. Don’t skip the crispy hash browns on the side.

- Café Du Parc – Weekend DJs, vegan options, and chicken & waffles that’ll cure any hangover.

Best Bottomless Lunch:
Kayne’s Bar
No this is not a typo – it is bottomless lunch. You know how everyone raves about bottomless brunch – this is a lunchtime version, and honestly, it might be even better.
You get to choose a main from tasty options like nachos, toasted specials, salads, burgers. You also get tea or coffee and bottomless mimosas (yes, really) for 90 minutes. And they’re not shy with the top-ups either! It’s €35 per person, and for what you get, it’s such good value.

For a Pint or a Cocktail
Best Beer Garden:
Scotts & Reidys – Both have a great atmosphere, especially in the summer.
Best Street Drinks:
Teddy O’Connors – The laneway is buzzing with energy during the warm months.
Best Guinness:
Jimmy O’Briens – It’s not just the creamy pint. Ask about the legendary tiny men’s toilet, which has earned a spot in New York bar folklore.
Best Cocktails:
Pigs Lane – Sophisticated, creative, and delicious.

Best Brewery Tour:
Killarney Brewing Company – Located on the Muckross Road, with a brilliant distillery in nearby Fossa.

Sweet Treats & Coffee Stops
Best Coffee:
Good Boy Coffee

Best Iced Coffee:
Luna – Try the Iced Dulce Coffee with their homemade caramel sauce. Devine with a capital D (Don’t forget to try their Cinnamon Roll).

Best Ice Cream:
Murphy’s – Brown bread ice cream. Just trust me.

Best Almond Croissant:
Petit Délice Bakery – Buttery, flaky, and straight out of Paris.
Living in Killarney has given me a deep appreciation for the slower, richer joys of life – walks in the park, hikes in the mountains, boating on the lakes, lingering over lunch, watching the town light up for special occasions, like Christmas. Speaking of which, you absolutely have to put Killarney on your December calendar. The Saturday Christmas parades make you feel like you’ve stepped straight into Miracle on 34th Street. Killarney is magical all year round, but at Christmas, it truly feels like a winter wonderland..Whether you’re coming for a weekend or a lifetime, I hope you experience even a fraction of the magic that keeps me falling in love with it, day after day.
