Cork Prison recorded an all-time high of 382 inmates in custody last night, significantly exceeding its official capacity of 296.
The ongoing issue of overcrowding has resulted in many inmates being forced to sleep on the floor, highlighting the growing strain on the facility.
In response to the crisis, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan last month unveiled plans to demolish the old Cork Prison—closed since 2016—and construct a new prison adjacent to the current site.
The proposed development, expected to be completed by 2031, would provide capacity for an additional 230 male and 100 female inmates, aiming to alleviate pressure on the current facility.
