A month-long hosepipe ban will come into effect across Cork from this Friday as Uisce Éireann introduces measures to safeguard water supplies.
Under the restrictions, the use of a hosepipe or similar device is prohibited for non-essential purposes, including watering gardens, washing private cars, cleaning leisure boats, filling or topping up domestic swimming or paddling pools, maintaining ornamental ponds (excluding fish ponds), and operating ornamental fountains, unless the water is required for commercial use.
The temporary ban has been introduced to help protect water supplies for homes, businesses, farms, hospitals, vulnerable customers and other essential services during a period of exceptionally high demand.
With recent hot weather expected to continue and rainfall remaining well below average, pressure on water sources and treated drinking water supplies has increased significantly.
Uisce Éireann says it is continuing to maximise water production, repair leaks, transport water where needed and manage the network to reduce outages and protect supplies.
Brian O’Leary, Regional Operations Manager with Uisce Éireann, is urging people across Cork to conserve water by using only what is necessary and avoiding non-essential water use until conditions improve.
